Global children are at risk of online exploitation and abuse. Our interventions are targeted to children (any one below the age of 18) and also youth and young adults.
There is no stereotype offender when it comes to sexual exploitation and abuse of children and young people. While a large number of the perpetrators may be adults and male, the internet has opened up the opportunity to a large audience and from the records it shows internet child sex offenders can be from a range of different professions, age, culture, ethnicity and can be from either gender. While the earlier notion of predators was of elderly western males who are always on the pry for vulnerable children through chat rooms or in modern times social media or multiplayer online gaming platforms, current data shows that even young people can perpetrate harms against other young people, specially through sexting, cyber bullying and also producing and distributing child sexual abuse materials. Moreover the use of the internet to groom children and stalk them for further sexual abuse is also well documented.
While a child may be vulnerable to strangers online, it has been well established that the most number of sexual abuse happens in familial settings and through known acquaintances. These incidents can then be capitalized through the use of Internet by sharing the documentation of such criminal acts. Where individuals are not interested in having sexual encounters with children and young people, they exploit them by monetizing and trading the child sexual abuse materials for profit.
